Engaging the Workforce in Safety - CSSE Event Announcement
Safety is one of the most important topics for any business because it’s more than just dollars and cents, it’s about keeping their workforces safe. The most important part of safety is behaviour, especially at-risk behaviour. This can often seem like an enormous challenge, but it can also be an enormous opportunity. In fact, one of the easiest ways to affect safety behaviour is also one of the most powerful: … stories.
The famous tale of the ‘razor blade in the apple at Halloween’ is a good example of how stories can have a tremendous and lasting influence on behaviour, it was just that, a tale. Researchers Joel Best and Gerald Horiuchi studied every reported Halloween case since 1958 and discovered that there were no incidents where strangers caused life-threatening harm on Halloween by tampering with kids’ candy, yet this story spread across the country and even into other countries within a few years, changing the behaviours of millions of children and parents for decades. Parents frantically checking wrappers for tampering, kids not accepting certain candy, families taking their kids to the mall, some parents wouldn’t allow their kids to go out on Halloween and it was just a story, it wasn’t even true.
Stories are one of the most powerful ways to impact long-term memory, feelings and attitudes, which can translate into shifting behaviours.
Join us for the CSSE annual “Bring Your Boss to Lunch” event where we welcome Martin Lesperance, who will share the secrets behind the power of stories. Learn about what makes a story powerful, memorable and meaningful. Explore ways to engage people and get them to share their own stories, to help establish and reinforce a “safety first” mentality at your workplace. Discover ideas on how to find great stories within your own organization that encourage a positive attitude towards safety and more!
